Understanding how the intersection of race/ethnicity & gender shapes career trajectories of women in medicine
Ifeoluwa Adesina | PhD candidate
My key focus in 2023 was to lay the groundwork for my research project that will explore how being situated at the intersection of race/ethnicity and gender shapes the professional experiences and career trajectories of women doctors who identify as belonging to racially and ethnically minoritised groups.
To begin with, a comprehensive scoping review was conducted to capture and synthesise existing global evidence on the nuanced challenges and opportunities encountered by racially and ethnically minoritised women healthcare professionals. The review also sought to pinpoint areas where further research is needed, as well as crucial priorities for consideration when developing initiatives to support the advancement of racially and ethnically minoritised women healthcare professionals. I look forward to sharing the findings of this scoping review with you soon, so stay tuned!
A couple of things to look forward to in 2024 include:
The first Advisory Group meeting for this project was held in January. The Advisory Group, consists of racially/ethnically minoritised women doctors from a range of medical specialties, and will play a pivotal role in shaping the project’s direction and maximising its impact.
Informed by the findings of the scoping review, interviews with women doctors belonging to racially and ethnically minoritised groups are expected to begin mid-2024. These interviews will provide an in-depth understanding of the individual, interpersonal, organisational, and societal factors that contribute to workplace experiences and career progression outcomes. The interviews will also explore how gender and racial and/or ethnic identities affect leadership identity formation and development.
I am so excited to continue building on what has been done so far within the ‘Exploring Intersectionality’ research and impact stream and looking forward to the year ahead!
